WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY
28th April 2005
Remember the dead, fight for the living.
- Work kills more people than wars. It also injures and mutilates
- Internationally two million workers die each year from work activities
- One death every fifteen seconds
- Six thousand a day
In the UK, latest HSE figures show workplace fatalities are up, major injuries are up and reportable over-three-day injuries are up. Asbestos cancers alone kill more people each year than road traffic accidents. Meanwhile enforcement by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) dropped off dramatically last year. . Many of these deaths could and should have been avoided. These tragedies bring grief and heartbreak to the families and relatives of the victims, whilst companies will continue to function and company directors will still receive their bonuses and quality time with their families.
This year's Workers' Memorial Day theme "Employer Accountability" is particularly appropriate and in tune with CWU Conference Policy.
- It's time for the killing to stop
- It's time to hold those responsible, accountable
-
- It's time to give safety reps the rights they need
- It's time for a change in the safety laws
