New Roads & Street Works Act
SAFE WORKS - BASIC PRINCIPLES
Who does what
Under the New Roads and Street Works Act, it is your responsibility to sign,
guard, light and maintain your works safely. "You must be trained & have a
current certificate to work in the external environment which includes Roads,
Streets (Highway) & Pavements. If you have not been trained you do not work in
this environment, "This means that if you do not have a valid up to date
certificate, you must "Not carry out any guarding of any type (even guarding of
footway boxes) until you have been retrained/ re-accredited" Failure to comply
is a criminal offence. For your own protection, the union's advice is to carry
out full Roadwork's guarding as laid out by the company's procedures.

Be Safe, Be Seen
You must wear the correct clothing when working in the street. The Union advice
is that you wear your High-Visibility clothing at all times, it is better to be
seen than to be sorry! If you are working in a footway box or have to guard
off an area on the pavement you should wear Hi-Viz clothing, which corresponds
to the relevant road speeds. For work on roads above a 30mph speed limit, these
should have both reflective braces & two reflective horizontal bands around the
body & arms. The Union advises all members, that they should have at least one
of each. If your Hi-Viz clothing is dirty, or after being cleaned the
reflective strips have lost their reflective ability, THE CLOTHING MUST BE
REPLACED.

Correct tools for the Job
You have a responsibility to protect yourself, your colleagues, members of the
public, in fact all people from danger, which is why all equipment that you use
must be in good condition.
You should always have the right amount of cones, box-guards etc, for the job.
If you don't have the right number then contact your manager. All signs that
you use should be clean and in good condition. Always consult your Manager or
Coach if you are in any doubt about correct procedures or if you are concerned
about safety. It is management's responsibility to provide the signs and
guarding equipment.
