TO ALL BRANCHES WITH MEMBERS EMPLOYED BY BT PLC
Dear Colleague
BT RETIREMENT AND PENSIONABLE AGE
Further to LTB 136/2005 of today's date, BT advised the Union that the
following article has been placed on the BT Intranet:
'BT has today (Thursday) strongly denied a report in the Times which says the
Company is considering raising its mandatory retirement age.
A BT spokesman said: "This article is purely speculative. Although there is an
internal review taking place, BT has absolutely no intention of making it
mandatory to work beyond the age of 60.
The review is basing its assumptions on a voluntary approach. No
recommendations have yet been finalised regarding the age at which BT may
require its people to retire."
The Company has confirmed that there is no intention to end the entitlement of
people to draw their pension at 60.
Once the review is complete and the Operating Committee has taken a decision on
its recommendations, full consultation will be held with the Trade Unions'.
The Union understands that the Daily Mail has also picked up on this story and
there may be comments in that newspaper on Friday. It would be helpful in these
circumstances if Branches would make sure that the contents of this LTB and of
LTB 136/05 was circulated as widely as possible to the Union's BT membership.
Yours sincerely
W McClory Nigel Cotgrove
