Work / Life Balance in BT
Michèle Emerson Acting Assistant Secretary - Equal Ops

The BT Unions (CWU and Connect) have, for many years, worked with the Company and negotiated on a whole range of policies designed to ensure a better balance and quality between work life and home life for all workers in BT.

The publication in 2000 of BT's work/life balance portfolio, 'Achieving the Balance', was welcomed by the BT Unions as an initiative that would have positive benefits for our members if properly administered.

However, whilst some members have benefited, the failure of BT to effectively apply the Achieving the Balance policy is of key concern to the Union. Therefore, Michele Emerson and Beth Lamont, on behalf of the CWU Telecoms Equal Opportunities and Personnel Committees, have been collaborating to progress the concerns raised with HQ, including issues raised at a meeting of the East Midlands Clerical RDA in February.

Beth Lamont and Aveen McHugh (Connect) met with BT on 1 May 2002 and brought to their attention the lack of application of the policy. One of the key areas of concern was a lack of awareness by managers of the policy. BT will be re-launching the policy in September, with a week-long event. It was agreed at this meeting that the BT Unions would design one of the days' events.

The BT Unions team, subsequently met and drew up proposals for the BT Unions day. These proposals include two seminars, one in a call centre and one in a sales environment. For the call centre seminar, we have suggested Leicester and Connect will be identifying a location for the seminar in a sales environment.

BT has accepted the initial proposals by the BT Unions in principle, however the details of the events have yet to be discussed. The BT Unions are seeking a further meeting following CWU Annual Conference to agree the details of the event. The outcome of this meeting will be reported to the BT Branches.
