CWU Road Assist

As a CWU member, you already have access to legal representation for personal injury claims in and out of work through the hugely successful Legal Services scheme. Your family and dependants are also eligible for this new scheme as part of your membership.

The combination of CWU law firm Simpson Millar together with Auto Indemnity provide you with a comprehensive service and security. When you are off duty, you and your family will have the benefit of this comprehensive legal service scheme, which works independently but along side your motor insurance policy and provides assistance for you should you be involved in an accident that was not your fault.

  • 1. Benefits provided under this scheme are applicable to CWU members outside their working hours.
  • 2. CWU members and dependents can use this service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • 3. Provision of hire and repair services is subject to approval by Auto Indemnity
  • 4. Advice and assistance is subject to CWU and /or Simpson Millar Solicitors assessment of liability
  • 5. You are obliged to co-operate fully with Simpson Miller and Auto Indemnity for the duration of your claim. Any deceit or false declaration on your part may result in you becoming liable for all services and costs that are incurred
  • 6. Should you appoint a solicitor other than recommended by the CWU, hire charges and any other fees and legal costs will become immediately payable by you
  • 7. If you fail to accept the advice of CWU or Simpson Miller the benefits of the scheme will be revoked and again, costs may be payable by you.

    CWU LEGAL ADVICE SERVICE

    Providing the Union's membership with free legal advice on non-work related issues.

    The service will be operated by the Union's panel solicitors, Simpson Millar, via a national call centre. Union members can access this service by dialling a national advice line number at which point they will be required to provide their membership and branch details.

    The call centre will be staffed by trained personnel and free legal advice can be given directly to the member. If the member requires a personal interview with a solicitor then details will be provided of firms who are participating in this scheme and the member will then contact them and make the necessary arrangements accordingly.

    Members need to be made aware that if they engage a solicitor to act on their behalf they do so on a private client basis and the CWU will not be responsible for any costs incurred.

    The service will be available from Monday 20th May 2002, operating Monday to Friday, 09:00-17:00. Outside of these hours an answer phone service will be available and calls will be returned as soon as possible.

    Improvements have been made to the new CWU telephone Legal Advice Service provided by Simpson Millar Solicitors.

  • Access to the help line will now be available from 08:00 - 20:00 hrs Monday - Friday

  • Email access is now available via the following address:

    The email access is primarily there to assist any member who has hearing difficulties and where telephone access is inappropriate. However, any member wishing to use this facility instead of the telephone access is free to do so.

    The additional facilities will be available from Monday 16 September 2002.


    The CWU provides legal services to members covering such areas as the Criminal Injury Compensation Scheme, whether on or off duty, if you are a victim of an unprovoked assault, the union can assist with a claim to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. The union may take up a claim for personal injury, where there is a valid claim against a third party, under the Claims for Damages for Personal Injury Scheme. Criminal Defense on Duty, if you are charged with a criminal offense whilst on duty the union may be able to assist you, depending on the circumstances.     In addition the branch has secured the services of Edwards Duthie Solicitors, providing members with a free half hour consultation on issues such as family and children law, domestic violence injunction, immigration law, housing/landlord and tenant law. Edwards Duthie also offer a discounted buying and selling homes and businesses services to members.
