CWU Union Learning National Workshop
The Britannia Europa, Gatwick
21 & 22 November 2007-11-22
The Conference was opened by Jane Loftus (President CWU), followed by Billy Hayes (General Secretary CWU) who gave the opening address. Billy talked about the value of the CWU Union Learning program and the role of its ULR's in helping to develop the program in to integral part of the CWU policy. Currently CWU ULR's have delivered learning opportunities to 15,000 of our members in the last four years.
Paul Dovey (Lifelong Learning Project Manager CWU) launched the new ULR Online ULR resource, giving delegates a view of how the new service will help to support the CWU's ULR's. Andrew Palmer (Head of Sector Skills Agreements, eSkills) gave a presentation on how other UK learning initiatives and the CWU ULR's program can and do work in partnership to bring learning opportunities to a wider range of people. Andrew will shortly be talking a learning/training role with BT.
John Denham MP (Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities & Skills) addressed the conference, John spoke about current and future government policy for learning and praised the CWU for its active participation in the government led learning program. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with BT and the CWU on learning, with the Secretary of State present did not occur due to BT pulling out at the very last minute leaving Trish Lavelle (Head of Education & Training CWU) and the Secretary of State in limbo.
Professor Mary Davis (Head of Centre for Trade Union Studies, London Metropolitan University) gave a very interesting address as the conferences quest speaker, linking the issues around the current government's education/learning policies and the goals of the wider trade union movement. The LMU works very closely with the CWU providing learning opportunities for CWU members.
